HISTORY

First established in 1871

In early 1871 after an initial meeting and "hearty" meal held at the Barnhill Railway station refreshment rooms, 5 gentlemen agreed to take a lease on a plot of land North of Reres Park to make a Curling pond. Today this land is where the houses are on Bonspiel gardens.

The Earl of Dalhousie who granted the lease became the clubs first president founded it on the 20th February 1871 at another "hearty "meal with refreshments at the Barnhil Railway station.

Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is ... as "the roaring game" because of the sound the stones make while travelling over the pebble (droplets of water applied to the playing surface).

For indoor tournaments the artificially created ice has its surface sprinkled with water droplets which freeze into tiny bumps on the surface. Called "pebbled ice", this surface helps the stone's grip and leads to more consistent curling.
